Joseph Graham “Gray” Davis Jr. is an American politician who served as the 37th Governor of California from 1999 until 2003. Born in the Bronx, New York, and raised in California, Davis pursued a career in public service that spanned over three decades. He graduated from Stanford University in 1964 and later earned his Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School. Davis began his political career as a legislative aide and went on to serve in various capacities, including Chief of Staff to Governor Jerry Brown and as a California State Assemblyman.
