Biography
Hailemariam Desalegn Boshe is an Ethiopian politician who served as the Prime Minister of Ethiopia from 2012 to 2018. Born into a rural family in Boloso Sore, Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia, Hailemariam rose through the ranks of the political landscape due to his academic background and political acumen. He graduated with a degree in civil engineering from Addis Ababa University and later earned a master’s degree in sanitation engineering from Tampere University of Technology in Finland. Hailemariam began his political career as a member of the Southern Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement (SEPDM), which is part of the coalition Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). He served as President of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR) from 2001 to 2006 and later became the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2010 to 2012. Following the death of the then-Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in 2012, Hailemariam was appointed as the Prime Minister, making him the first Protestant Christian to hold the office in Ethiopia. His tenure was marked by both economic growth and political unrest. Despite his efforts to implement reforms, he faced criticism for human rights abuses and lack of political freedom. In February 2018, he announced his resignation to pave the way for reforms, making him the first Ethiopian leader to resign voluntarily in modern history.
