Biography
Kenneth Lee Lay, commonly known as Kenneth Lay, was a prominent American businessman best known for his role as the CEO and Chairman of Enron Corporation. Born in Tyrone, Missouri, Lay grew up in a modest, rural setting and displayed an early aptitude for academics and leadership. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Missouri in 1964 and later completed a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Houston in 1970. Lay began his career in the energy sector at the Humble Oil & Refining Company, which later became part of Exxon. He also held various positions in the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Federal Power Commission. In 1985, Lay merged Houston Natural Gas with InterNorth to form Enron, which he then led to become one of the largest energy companies in the world. Under his leadership, Enron was initially highly successful, innovating in the field of energy trading and earning hundreds of millions of dollars. However, Enron’s success was short-lived. In 2001, the company declared bankruptcy amid a massive scandal involving accounting fraud and corruption. Lay was indicted on multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy, and he was convicted in 2006. Before sentencing could take place, Lay died of a heart attack in July 2006.
