Biography

Luca Parmitano is an Italian astronaut and engineer who has made significant contributions to space exploration. Born in Paternò, Sicily, Italy, Parmitano grew up with a strong interest in science and aviation. He graduated with a master’s degree in political sciences from the University of Naples Federico II in 1999, and later earned a degree in experimental flight test engineering from the French Test Pilot School, École du Personnel Navigant d’Essais et de Réception (EPNER). Parmitano began his career as a pilot in the Italian Air Force, where he achieved the rank of colonel. His exceptional skills and dedication led to his selection as an astronaut in 2009 by the European Space Agency (ESA). Parmitano’s first spaceflight was on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2013, where he served as a flight engineer for Expedition 36/37. During his mission, he conducted several spacewalks and numerous scientific experiments, contributing valuable data to the international scientific community. In July 2019, Parmitano returned to the ISS for his second mission, Expedition 60/61, during which he became the first Italian astronaut to command the ISS.
