Biography
Monica Seles, born on December 2, 1973, in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia (now Serbia), is a retired professional tennis player and former world No. 1. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest female tennis players of all time. Seles began playing tennis at a young age, coached by her father Karolj Seles, and quickly rose to prominence with her powerful two-handed strokes on both sides. At the tender age of 16, she won her first Grand Slam title at the French Open in 1990, making her the youngest-ever champion at Roland Garros. Throughout her career, Seles won a total of 9 Grand Slam singles titles, including four Australian Opens (1991-1993, 1996), three French Opens (1990, 1991, 1992), and two US Opens (1991, 1992). Her career was tragically interrupted in 1993 when she was stabbed on court by a deranged fan during a match in Hamburg, Germany. This incident forced her out of the sport for over two years. Despite the setback, Seles made a triumphant return to tennis in 1995 and continued to compete at a high level, although she never quite regained her previous dominance. In 2003, Seles played her last professional match and officially retired in 2008. Post-retirement, she has been involved in various philanthropic activities, coaching, and has authored a book, “Getting a Grip: On My Body, My Mind, My Self,” which details her struggles and triumphs both on and off the court.
