Biography

David Berman was an influential American musician, singer-songwriter, and poet, best known as the frontman of the indie rock band Silver Jews. Born in Williamsburg, Virginia, Berman co-founded Silver Jews in 1989 with Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. The band quickly gained a cult following for its lo-fi sound and Berman’s poignant, often witty lyrics. Over the years, Berman released several critically acclaimed albums with Silver Jews, including “American Water” and “Bright Flight.” In 2009, Berman disbanded Silver Jews and took a hiatus from music, during which time he continued to write poetry. He returned to the music scene in 2019 with a new project called Purple Mountains, releasing a self-titled album that was met with widespread acclaim. Tragically, his return was short-lived, as David Berman passed away later that year.
