Alan G. Poindexter was an accomplished American astronaut, naval officer, and aviator. Born in Pasadena, California, Poindexter grew up in Rockville, Maryland, and later moved to Coronado, California. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering degree in 1986 and earned a Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1995. Poindexter began his naval career as an aviation officer and served as a naval aviator, amassing over 4,000 hours of flight time in more than 30 different aircraft. He was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in June 1998. During his career at NASA, Poindexter flew on two space missions: STS-122 in 2008 and STS-131 in 2010. He served as the Pilot for STS-122 on the Space Shuttle Atlantis and as the Commander for STS-131 on the Space Shuttle Discovery, contributing significantly to the construction and maintenance of the International Space Station (ISS). Poindexter retired from NASA in December 2010 and returned to the Navy, where he continued to serve in various capacities until his untimely death in a watercraft accident in 2012.
