Biography
Alberto Salazar is a Cuban-born American former long-distance runner and track coach, renowned for his significant contributions to the sport both as an athlete and as a coach. Born in Havana, Cuba, Salazar moved to the United States as a child. He attended the University of Oregon, where he earned a name for himself as a formidable distance runner under the coaching of Bill Dellinger. Salazar’s athletic career was highlighted by his victories in the New York City Marathon in 1980, 1981, and 1982. He also won the Boston Marathon in 1982 in what is often referred to as “The Duel in the Sun,” one of the most memorable races in marathon history. Unfortunately, his competitive running career was plagued by injuries and health issues, leading to an early retirement. Transitioning into coaching, Salazar became the head coach of the Nike Oregon Project, where he trained some of the world’s top distance runners, including Mo Farah and Galen Rupp. His coaching career, however, was marred by controversy, culminating in a four-year ban in 2019 for doping violations, which he has consistently denied.
