Aleksandar Hemon is a Bosnian-American writer, born on September 9, 1964, in Sarajevo, then part of Yugoslavia. After graduating from the University of Sarajevo with a degree in literature, he worked as a journalist and writer in Yugoslavia. In 1992, during the outbreak of the Bosnian War, Hemon moved to the United States on a temporary visa.
