Alexander Douglas Smith, commonly known as Alex Smith, is a retired professional American football quarterback. Born on May 7, 1984, in Bremerton, Washington, Smith’s career spanned 16 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at the University of Utah, where he was recognized as an All-American and led the Utes to a perfect season and victory in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl. He was selected first overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2005 NFL Draft. Smith also played for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Washington Football Team (now Washington Commanders). Despite a devastating leg injury in 2018 that nearly resulted in amputation, Smith made a remarkable comeback to the NFL and was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2020. He retired from professional football in April 2021.
