Rene Alexander Acosta, commonly known as Alexander Acosta, is an American attorney, academic, and politician who served as the 27th United States Secretary of Labor from 2017 to 2019 under President Donald Trump. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Acosta is of Cuban-American heritage. He attended Gulliver Preparatory School before earning his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and his Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. Before his tenure as Secretary of Labor, Acosta held various significant roles. He was a member of the National Labor Relations Board, served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, and was the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. Acosta has also served as the dean of Florida International University College of Law. As Secretary of Labor, Acosta was involved in several high-profile initiatives, including efforts to improve job training programs and reduce regulations on businesses. His tenure, however, was marred by controversy related to a plea deal he negotiated with financier Jeffrey Epstein in 2008, leading to his resignation in 2019.
