Biography

Alfred Sisley was a British Impressionist landscape painter who was born in France and spent most of his life there. He was born on October 30, 1839, in Paris to affluent English parents and initially pursued a business career. However, in 1862, he decided to study art at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. There, he met fellow artists Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Frédéric Bazille, with whom he would form the nucleus of the Impressionist movement. Sisley is renowned for his landscape paintings, particularly of the French countryside, which capture light and atmosphere with remarkable subtlety. Unlike some of his contemporaries, Sisley remained faithful to landscapes throughout his career and did not venture much into other genres. Despite his immense talent, Sisley struggled financially for most of his life. He died in relative obscurity, but his work was later recognized as essential to the Impressionist canon. He passed away on January 29, 1899, in Moret-sur-Loing, France.
