Amy McGrath is an American politician, former Marine fighter pilot, and public servant. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and raised in Edgewood, Kentucky. McGrath attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1997, and subsequently earned a Master’s degree in international and global security studies from Johns Hopkins University and a graduate certificate in legislative studies from Georgetown University. McGrath served in the United States Marine Corps for 20 years, becoming the first woman to fly a combat mission in an F/A-18 on a strike mission in Afghanistan in 2002. She flew 89 combat missions in total, serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan. After retiring from the military, McGrath turned her focus to politics. She ran as a Democratic candidate for Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District in 2018, narrowly losing the election. In 2020, she ran for the U.S. Senate in Kentucky against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, but was defeated in the general election.
