Arthur Charles Clarke was born in Minehead, Somerset, England, and became one of the most celebrated science fiction writers of the 20th century. He is best known for his novel “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which was developed concurrently with the screenplay for the Stanley Kubrick-directed film of the same name. Clarke’s works are characterized by their scientific accuracy and visionary predictions, many of which have come to fruition. Before becoming a full-time writer, Clarke worked as a radar instructor in the Royal Air Force during World War II and later as a scientific advisor.
