Robert “Bob” Ehrlich, born Robert Leroy Ehrlich Jr., is an American politician and former governor of Maryland. Ehrlich was born in Arbutus, Maryland, and grew up in a working-class family. He attended Gilman School in Baltimore, where he excelled academically and athletically, earning a football scholarship to Princeton University. After graduating from Princeton in 1979 with a degree in political science, Ehrlich went on to earn a law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1982. Ehrlich began his political career in the Maryland House of Delegates, where he served from 1987 to 1995. He then represented Maryland’s 2nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003. In 2002, Ehrlich was elected the 60th governor of Maryland, serving from 2003 to 2007. During his tenure as governor, Ehrlich focused on issues such as education reform, transportation infrastructure, and fiscal responsibility. He was known for his bipartisan approach and efforts to modernize Maryland’s economy. After his term as governor, Ehrlich returned to private law practice and remained active in politics, including an unsuccessful bid to regain the governorship in 2010.
