Biography
Ernesto “Che” Guevara, born on June 14, 1928, in Rosario, Argentina, was a revolutionary leader, physician, author, guerrilla warfare strategist, and diplomat. He played a pivotal role in the Cuban Revolution alongside Fidel Castro and became a symbol of rebellion and leftist movements worldwide. Guevara’s early years were marked by his profound interest in Marxist theory, which was further solidified during his travels across Latin America. Witnessing widespread poverty, hunger, and disease profoundly impacted his ideology. After medical school, Guevara joined Castro’s 26th of July Movement and was instrumental in the guerrilla campaign that overthrew Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Following the revolution, he held several key positions in the new Cuban government, including Minister of Industries. In the mid-1960s, Guevara left Cuba to incite revolutionary activities in other parts of the world, including the Congo and Bolivia. His efforts in Bolivia, however, met with failure, and he was captured and executed by the Bolivian army in La Higuera on October 9, 1967. His life and death have since cemented his status as a martyr for socialist and communist movements, and his image remains an enduring icon of leftist revolution.
