Born in Greenwich, Connecticut, Coons attended Amherst College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and political science. He later obtained a Master’s degree in Ethics from Yale Divinity School and a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. Coons began his career in public service as a law clerk for Judge Jane Richards Roth on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
