Cleveland Amory was an American author, historian, animal rights activist, and television commentator. Born in Nahant, Massachusetts, he attended Harvard University, where he became the president of The Harvard Crimson, the university’s daily newspaper. After graduating in 1939, Amory began a career as a writer and journalist, and he gained prominence with his series of social history books such as “The Proper Bostonians” (1947), “The Last Resorts” (1952), and “Who Killed Society?” (1960). Amory was also a well-known animal rights advocate. He founded The Fund for Animals in 1967, an organization dedicated to animal welfare, and served as its president until his death. He authored the famous “Cat Who Came for Christmas” trilogy, which further cemented his status as an animal lover and advocate. In addition, he was a regular commentator on NBC’s “Today” show and contributed to various publications, including TV Guide.
