Biography

Clyde Austin Drexler, often known by his nickname “Clyde the Glide,” is a retired American professional basketball player who played in the NBA from 1983 to 1998. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Drexler grew up in Houston, Texas, where he attended Sterling High School. He went on to play college basketball at the University of Houston, where he was part of the famed “Phi Slama Jama” team that reached the NCAA Final Four in 1982 and 1983. Drexler was selected 14th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1983 NBA Draft. He quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier shooting guards and small forwards, known for his athleticism, scoring ability, and smooth playing style. Drexler spent the majority of his career in Portland, leading the team to the NBA Finals in 1990 and 1992. In 1995, he was traded to the Houston Rockets, where he won his first and only NBA Championship that same year. Over his illustrious career, Drexler was a 10-time NBA All-Star and was named to the All-NBA First Team in 1992. He retired with career averages of 20.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game. Drexler was also a member of the 1992 United States men’s Olympic basketball team, known as the “Dream Team,” which won the gold medal in Barcelona. After retiring as a player, Drexler served as a coach for the University of Houston men’s basketball team and has been involved in various business ventures. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004.
