David Norman Dinkins was an American politician, lawyer, and author who served as the 106th Mayor of New York City, from 1990 to 1993. He was the first African American to hold the office. Dinkins was born and raised in Trenton, New Jersey. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and later attended Howard University, where he earned a degree in mathematics. He subsequently received his law degree from Brooklyn Law School. Dinkins began his political career in the New York State Assembly and later became the President of the New York City Board of Elections and City Clerk. In 1985, he was elected Manhattan Borough President, a position he held until his mayoral victory in 1989. During his tenure as mayor, Dinkins focused on crime reduction, public health, and economic development. Despite these efforts, his term was marked by racial tensions and economic challenges. After leaving office, he remained active in public life, teaching at Columbia University and engaging in civic activities.
