Biography

Dennis Edwards was an American soul and R&B singer who is best known for being one of the lead vocalists of the legendary Motown act, The Temptations. He was born in Fairfield, Alabama, and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. Edwards started his music career as a member of the gospel group The Mighty Clouds of Joy. He later joined The Contours, another Motown group, before being recruited to replace David Ruffin in The Temptations in 1968. His powerful voice helped to redefine the group’s sound, leading them into a more psychedelic and funk-driven era. Edwards’ tenure with The Temptations included hits like “Cloud Nine,” “I Can’t Get Next to You,” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” the latter of which won three Grammy Awards. Edwards left and rejoined The Temptations several times over the decades and also pursued a solo career, releasing hits such as “Don’t Look Any Further.” He continued to perform both as a solo artist and with other members of The Temptations until his health declined later in life.
