Biography
Elena Kagan is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She was born on April 28, 1960, in New York City. Kagan grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, where she attended Hunter College High School. She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1981 with an A.B. in History, where she was also the editor of the Princeton University Press. She then earned a Master of Philosophy in Politics at the University of Oxford and later graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1986, where she was supervisory editor of the Harvard Law Review. Kagan began her legal career as a law clerk for Judge Abner Mikva of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and later for Justice Thurgood Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court. She then worked in private practice and served as a professor at the University of Chicago Law School. Kagan also worked in the Clinton administration as Associate Counsel to the President and later as Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy. In 2003, she became the first female dean of Harvard Law School. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed her as the first female Solicitor General of the United States. She was nominated by Obama to the Supreme Court in May 2010 and was confirmed by the Senate in August 2010, making her the fourth woman to serve on the Court.
