Elizabeth Dole, born Mary Elizabeth Alexander Hanford, is an American politician and author who has served in both the executive and legislative branches of the U.S. government. Born on July 29, 1936, in Salisbury, North Carolina, Dole has had a distinguished career in public service. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Duke University and her law degree from Harvard Law School, one of the few women of her time to do so. She is married to Bob Dole, a former U.S. Senator and the 1996 Republican presidential nominee.
