Born on October 11, 1925, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Leonard grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where his father worked as a site locator for General Motors. He attended the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II before earning a degree in English and philosophy from the University of Detroit.
