Biography

Eugene Victor Debs was an American socialist, political activist, and trade unionist. Debs’s early work as a labor organizer and his leadership in the American Railway Union (ARU) laid the foundation for his political career. He gained national attention when he was imprisoned for his role in the Pullman Strike of 1894. While in jail, Debs read widely and embraced socialism, which led him to co-found the Socialist Party of America in 1901. He advocated for workers’ rights, social justice, and economic equality throughout his life. Debs’s most famous speech, delivered in Canton, Ohio in 1918, led to his arrest under the Espionage Act for speaking against World War I.
