Eve Babitz was an American artist, writer, and socialite, celebrated for her vivid depictions of the Los Angeles cultural scene during the 1960s and 1970s. Born into a creative family, her father was a classical violinist and her mother was an artist. Babitz’s godfather was none other than Igor Stravinsky, which placed her in a unique position to engage with influential artistic circles from a young age. She attended Hollywood High School and later gained notoriety for her daring and candid personality. Babitz first came into the public eye with a provocative photograph in 1963, where she posed nude opposite Marcel Duchamp, who was playing chess. This photograph set the tone for her unapologetically bold and unconventional life. Throughout her career, she authored numerous books, blending memoir, fiction, and cultural critique. Her works include titles such as “Eve’s Hollywood,” “Slow Days, Fast Company,” and “Sex and Rage.” In addition to her writing, Babitz was a talented visual artist, designing album covers for notable musicians like Buffalo Springfield and Linda Ronstadt. Despite her bohemian lifestyle, she was a keen observer of the cultural zeitgeist, capturing the essence of Los Angeles with wit and nuance. Babitz’s life took a dramatic turn in 1997 when she suffered severe burns in an accident, leading to a long period of recovery and relative seclusion. She passed away on December 17, 2021.
