Gary Hart, born Gary Warren Hartpence, is an American politician, diplomat, and lawyer who served as a U.S. Senator from Colorado from 1975 to 1987. A member of the Democratic Party, Hart was a leading contender for the party’s presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988 before his campaigns were derailed by allegations of an extramarital affair. He was born in Ottawa, Kansas, and attended Southern Nazarene University, Yale Divinity School, and Yale Law School. Apart from his political career, Hart has also authored several books on national security and international relations. After his Senate career, he continued to be active in politics and public service, including serving as the United States Special Envoy for Northern Ireland from 2014 to 2017.
