Biography
Gene Ween, whose real name is Aaron Freeman, is an American musician best known as the co-founder and lead vocalist of the alternative rock band Ween. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Freeman met his musical partner, Mickey Melchiondo (Dean Ween), in junior high school. The duo formed Ween in 1984, and they quickly gained a cult following for their eclectic and often humorous style, which spans numerous genres including rock, punk, funk, soul, country, and more. Ween released their debut album, “GodWeenSatan: The Oneness,” in 1990, and continued to build their legacy with critically acclaimed albums such as “Chocolate and Cheese” (1994), “The Mollusk” (1997), and “White Pepper” (2000). Known for their energetic live performances, Ween has amassed a dedicated fan base over the decades. In 2012, Freeman announced that he was leaving Ween to focus on his solo career and personal issues, particularly his struggles with substance abuse. He released a solo album, “Marvelous Clouds,” that same year. Freeman and Melchiondo eventually reunited in 2015, much to the delight of their fans, and Ween has been active ever since.
