Biography

George Plimpton was an American journalist, writer, editor, and actor, known primarily for his innovative style of participatory journalism. Born into a well-to-do family in New York City, Plimpton pursued a prestigious education before embarking on a career that would see him become one of the most distinctive voices in American journalism. He attended Harvard University, where he was the editor of the Harvard Lampoon, and later earned a Master’s degree from King’s College, Cambridge. Plimpton’s approach to journalism was unique; he often inserted himself into the stories he was covering. He played quarterback for the Detroit Lions, pitched to major league baseball players, performed as a circus trapeze artist, and even played a small role in a Western film. These experiences were chronicled in a series of books, including “Paper Lion,” “Out of My League,” and “The Bogey Man,” which showcased his humorous and self-deprecating style. Apart from his writing, Plimpton was also a co-founder and editor of The Paris Review, a literary magazine that has published some of the most significant writers of the 20th century. He was also an accomplished television personality, appearing in various roles and hosting documentary series.
