He began his career as a writer and educator, teaching English at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). Long is best known for his historical novel “Interlinear to Cabeza de Vaca,” published in 1936, which explores the journey of the Spanish explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca. His literary works often delved into themes of spirituality, history, and human resilience. He was a part of the “Santa Fe Writers Project,” a group of writers who aimed to capture the spirit and culture of the American Southwest. Besides writing, Long was involved in publishing and co-founded the Writers’ Editions, a cooperative publishing venture in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he spent much of his later life.
