He began his career as a writer and educator, teaching English at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). Long is best known for his historical novel “Interlinear to Cabeza de Vaca,” published in 1936, which explores the journey of the Spanish explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca. He was a part of the “Santa Fe Writers Project,” a group of writers who aimed to capture the spirit and culture of the American Southwest.
