Biography
Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author, born on April 2, 1805, in Odense, Denmark. He is best known for his fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages and continue to be published in “millions of copies around the world.” Andersen’s works have inspired plays, ballets, and films. Some of his most famous stories include “The Little Mermaid,” “The Ugly Duckling,” “Thumbelina,” “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” and “The Snow Queen.” Andersen was born into a poor family; his father was a shoemaker, and his mother was a washerwoman. Despite his impoverished beginnings, Andersen showed an early talent for literature and the arts. He moved to Copenhagen at the age of 14 to pursue a career in acting but eventually turned to writing. His first book, “A Journey on Foot from Holmen’s Canal to the East Point of Amager,” was published in 1829. However, it was his fairy tales, first published in 1835, that brought him fame. Over his lifetime, he wrote 156 fairy tales, along with novels, poems, and travelogues. Andersen never married and had no children. He lived a life of travel, constantly seeking new experiences and inspiration for his stories. He passed away on August 4, 1875, in Copenhagen, Denmark.
