Harriet Tubman, born Araminta Ross, was an American abolitionist and political activist. Born into slavery, she escaped and subsequently made some 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people, including family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. Born in Dorchester County, Maryland, Tubman was deeply religious and believed she was guided by divine visions. After escaping to Philadelphia in 1849, she dedicated her life to fighting slavery and later championed women’s suffrage.
