Herbert H. Kohl, born February 7, 1935, is an American businessman and politician who served as a United States Senator from Wisconsin from 1989 to 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, Kohl was also the owner of the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1985 to 2014. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to a family of Polish Jewish immigrants, Kohl attended Washington High School and graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He later obtained an MBA from Harvard Business School. Before entering politics, Kohl built a successful career in business, notably managing the family-owned Kohl’s department stores, which expanded significantly under his leadership before being sold in 1972. His business acumen and community involvement paved the way for his political career. As a Senator, Kohl was known for his support of education, healthcare, and senior citizens’ issues. He chose not to seek re-election in 2012 and retired from the Senate in January 2013.
