Johannes Peter “Honus” Wagner, also known as “The Flying Dutchman” due to his German heritage and exceptional speed, was an American professional baseball shortstop who played 21 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1897 to 1917. Born on February 24, 1874, in Chartiers, Pennsylvania, Wagner is widely considered one of the greatest shortstops in baseball history. Wagner began his MLB career with the Louisville Colonels before moving to the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he spent the majority of his career.
