Biography

Jack Cade was an English activist and leader of a popular revolt in 1450, known as Cade’s Rebellion, which took place during the reign of King Henry VI. Not much is known about his early life, including his actual birth name, which is believed to be John Mortimer. Cade is thought to have been born in Ireland but later settled in Kent, England. The rebellion he led was driven by widespread discontent with the government’s corruption, high taxes, and the mismanagement of the military during the Hundred Years’ War. Cade’s Rebellion marched on London, presenting a series of demands known as “The Complaint of the Poor Commons of Kent.” Although the rebellion initially saw some success, Cade was eventually captured and killed.
