Jawed Karim is a German-American software engineer and Internet entrepreneur, best known as one of the co-founders of YouTube. Born in Merseburg, East Germany, Karim moved with his family to West Germany and later to the United States. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he met his future YouTube co-founders, Steve Chen and Chad Hurley. Karim left school to join PayPal, where he became acquainted with Chen and Hurley. The idea for YouTube was conceptualized after Karim had difficulty finding video clips online of the 2004 Super Bowl incident involving Janet Jackson. In February 2005, YouTube was launched, and Karim uploaded the first video, titled “Me at the zoo,” on April 23, 2005.
