Biography
Johan Alexander Santana Araque, born March 13, 1979, is a Venezuelan former professional baseball starting pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Minnesota Twins from 2000 to 2007 and the New York Mets from 2008 to 2012. Known for his devastating changeup and exceptional pitching mechanics, Santana is a two-time Cy Young Award winner, securing the accolade in 2004 and 2006. He also led the league in strikeouts three times and was a four-time All-Star. Santana began his professional career in the Houston Astros organization but was acquired by the Minnesota Twins in the 1999 Rule 5 draft. After a few seasons with moderate success, he broke out in 2004, winning his first Cy Young Award and leading the Twins to multiple playoff appearances. His success continued with the New York Mets, including a memorable no-hitter on June 1, 2012, the first in the franchise’s history. Unfortunately, injuries plagued the latter part of his career, and multiple attempts at comebacks were unsuccessful. Santana officially retired from professional baseball in 2018.
