Johnny Weissmuller, born Peter Johann Weissmüller, was an Austrian-American actor, Olympian, and one of the world’s best swimmers in the early 20th century. He was born in Freidorf, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now part of Romania) and immigrated to the United States with his family as a child. Weissmuller rose to fame by winning five Olympic gold medals in swimming and one bronze medal in water polo for the United States in the 1920s. He set numerous world records and was an unparalleled swimming champion of his era. After his swimming career, Weissmuller transitioned to acting and became famous for his portrayal of Tarzan in a series of films during the 1930s and 1940s. His distinctive Tarzan yell became iconic. Weissmuller starred in twelve Tarzan films, making him the most recognizable Tarzan of all time. Later, he also played the role of Jungle Jim in a series of films and television shows. Weissmuller was married five times and had three children. Despite his success, he faced financial difficulties later in life. He passed away in Acapulco, Mexico, in 1984.
