Joni Kay Ernst is an American politician and retired military officer serving as the junior United States senator for Iowa since 2015. A member of the Republican Party, she was the first woman to represent Iowa in the U.S. Congress and the first female combat veteran elected to the United States Senate. Ernst was born in Red Oak, Iowa, and she graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She later earned a Master of Public Administration from Columbus College. Prior to her Senate career, Ernst served as a lieutenant colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard, where she commanded the 185th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion.
