Julie Mehretu is an Ethiopian-American contemporary visual artist known for her large-scale, abstract paintings and drawings that layer architectural elements with personal and political histories. Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Mehretu moved with her family to Michigan in 1977 to escape political turmoil. She earned a BA in Art from Kalamazoo College in 1992 and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1997. Mehretu’s work often explores themes of urban experience, social upheaval, and the impact of globalization. Her complex, multi-layered compositions fuse elements of mapping, landscape, and abstraction to reflect the densely interconnected nature of modern life.
