Born on November 3, 1960, in Jackson, Michigan, Karch’s full name is derived from his Hungarian heritage. He grew up in Santa Barbara, California, where he began playing volleyball at a young age under the influence of his father, Laszlo Kiraly, who was also a volleyball enthusiast. After retiring from professional play, Karch transitioned to coaching, eventually becoming the head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team.
