Kathleen Babineaux Blanco was an American politician who served as the 54th Governor of Louisiana from January 2004 to January 2008. She was born in New Iberia, Louisiana, and grew up in a large, Catholic Cajun family. Blanco earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Before entering politics, she worked as a teacher and a stay-at-home mother. Blanco’s political career began in 1984 when she was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives. She later served as the state’s first female Lieutenant Governor from 1996 to 2004. In 2003, she made history by becoming Louisiana’s first female governor.
