Born into a Gujarati family in Pune, Maharashtra, Kiran started her career as a trainee brewer in Carlton & United Breweries in Australia. However, she faced gender bias in the brewing industry and subsequently shifted her focus to biotechnology. In 1978, she founded Biocon India with a seed capital of INR 10,000.
