Kitty Carlisle, born Catherine Conn on September 3, 1910, in New Orleans, Louisiana, was an accomplished musician, stage and film actress, and television personality. She was best known for her role as a long-time panelist on the game show “To Tell the Truth.” Carlisle’s career spanned over seven decades, during which she became a beloved figure in American entertainment. Carlisle’s mother, Hortense Holtzman, was a formidable woman who was determined to see her daughter succeed. Kitty was educated in Switzerland and later attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She began her career in opera, performing in various productions across Europe before transitioning to Broadway and Hollywood. In addition to her musical talents, Carlisle appeared in several films during the 1930s and 1940s, including the Marx Brothers’ “A Night at the Opera” in 1935. She also had a successful career on Broadway, with notable performances in productions such as “Three Waltzes” and “White Horse Inn.” Kitty Carlisle married playwright and director Moss Hart in 1946, with whom she had two children. After Hart’s death in 1961, she continued to work in television and theater while also becoming a passionate advocate for the arts. She served on the boards of several arts organizations, including the New York State Council on the Arts. Carlisle remained active in the entertainment industry well into her 90s, making her final public appearance in 2006.
