Ledisi Anibade Young, known mononymously as Ledisi, is an American R&B and jazz recording artist, songwriter, and actress. Born on March 28, 1972, in New Orleans, Louisiana, she grew up in a musical family and was heavily influenced by the rich musical culture of her hometown. Her mother, Nyra Dynese, was a singer in a Louisiana R&B band, and her stepfather, Joseph Pierce III, was a drummer. Ledisi began performing publicly at age eight, and her talent quickly became evident. She pursued her passion for music at the University of California, Berkeley, where she studied opera and piano. In 1995, she formed the band Anibade, which gained a local following in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her breakthrough came in 2000 with the release of her independent album “Soulsinger: The Revival,” which showcased her unique blend of jazz, R&B, and soul. Over the years, Ledisi has released several critically acclaimed albums, including “Lost & Found” (2007), “Turn Me Loose” (2009), and “Let Love Rule” (2017).
