Biography

Mae Carol Jemison is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She was born on October 17, 1956, in Decatur, Alabama. Jemison moved with her family to Chicago, Illinois, at the age of three, where she was raised. She graduated from Morgan Park High School in 1973 and then attended Stanford University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering in 1977. She also fulfilled the requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in African and Afro-American Studies. Jemison then attended Cornell Medical School, earning her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1981. After completing her medical internship and working as a general practitioner, she joined the Peace Corps and served as a medical officer in Liberia and Sierra Leone from 1983 to 1985. In 1987, Jemison was accepted into NASA’s astronaut program, and on September 12, 1992, she flew into space aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour, becoming the first African American woman to travel in space. During her mission, STS-47, she orbited the Earth for nearly eight days. After leaving NASA in 1993, Jemison founded The Jemison Group, a technology consulting firm that integrates socio-cultural issues into the design of new technologies. She is also a strong advocate for science education and has worked on numerous initiatives to inspire young people to pursue careers in science and technology.
