Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell was an American novelist and journalist, best known for her epic novel “Gone with the Wind,” published in 1936. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Mitchell was the daughter of Eugene Muse Mitchell, a prominent attorney, and Mary Isabel “Maybelle” Stephens, a suffragist. She grew up hearing stories of the Civil War from her relatives, which later inspired her writing. Mitchell attended Washington Seminary in Atlanta and later Smith College in Massachusetts, though she left college after her mother’s death in 1919. She returned to Atlanta and began working as a journalist for the Atlanta Journal Sunday Magazine. Her career in journalism was cut short due to an ankle injury, which led her to begin writing “Gone with the Wind.” The novel, set during the American Civil War and Reconstruction Era, became an immediate success, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937. It was later adapted into a highly successful film in 1939. Despite her fame, Mitchell did not publish another novel in her lifetime. Margaret Mitchell married twice: first to Berrien “Red” Upshaw, from whom she divorced, and then to John Robert Marsh, who remained her husband until her death.
