Matthieu Ricard is a French writer, photographer, and Buddhist monk. Born in Aix-les-Bains, France, he is the son of the late Jean-François Revel, a renowned French philosopher, and Yahne Le Toumelin, a painter. Ricard earned a Ph.D. in molecular genetics at the Pasteur Institute under the supervision of Nobel laureate François Jacob. However, after completing his doctoral thesis in 1972, he decided to leave his scientific career behind and focus on Tibetan Buddhism. He moved to the Himalayas and became a close student of the revered Tibetan master Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Ricard has lived in the Himalayas for more than 40 years, primarily residing at the Shechen Tennyi Dargyeling Monastery in Nepal.
