Michael James Massimino, commonly known as Mike Massimino, is an American engineer and retired NASA astronaut. Born in Oceanside, New York, he has the distinction of being a veteran of two Space Shuttle missions. Massimino holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Columbia University and a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His first spaceflight was STS-109 aboard Space Shuttle Columbia in March 2002, a mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope. His second flight was STS-125 aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis in May 2009, which was also a mission to repair and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope. Massimino has also made notable appearances in popular media, including guest roles on the TV show “The Big Bang Theory.” Post-NASA, he has taken on roles as a professor at Columbia University and an author, writing the book “Spaceman: An Astronaut’s Unlikely Journey to Unlock the Secrets of the Universe.”
