Biography
Willard Mitt Romney, born on March 12, 1947, is an American politician and businessman who has served as the junior United States Senator from Utah since January 2019. He was the Republican Party’s nominee for President of the United States in the 2012 election, losing to incumbent President Barack Obama. Romney was also the 70th Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007. Romney was born in Detroit, Michigan, and is the son of George W. Romney, a former Governor of Michigan and a 1968 presidential candidate, and Lenore Romney. He was raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and later attended Stanford University. He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in France before earning his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University in 1971. Romney then earned a dual JD-MBA from Harvard University in 1975. Before entering politics, Romney had a successful career in business. He worked for the management consulting firm Bain & Company, eventually becoming its CEO. In 1984, he co-founded and led the spin-off company Bain Capital, a highly profitable private equity investment firm. Romney’s political career includes his tenure as Governor of Massachusetts, where he implemented a state-level health care reform program that provided near-universal health insurance access. His presidential campaign in 2012 focused on economic issues and critiqued President Obama’s policies, but he ultimately lost the election. Romney returned to the political scene by winning the U.S. Senate seat for Utah in 2018. He has been known for his occasional departures from party lines, most notably being the only Republican senator to vote to convict President Donald Trump during his first impeachment trial in 2020.
